HMPV Virus

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe illness in vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly. In India, HMPV infections have been documented since at least 2001.

In early January 2025, several new HMPV cases were reported across various Indian cities:

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Two cases, including a three-month-old girl.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: At least two cases, with one involving an eight-year-old boy.

Nagpur, Maharashtra: Two cases reported.

Chennai and Salem, Tamil Nadu: One case each.

Mumbai, Maharashtra: One case reported.

These reports bring the total number of confirmed HMPV cases in India to at least nine since January 7, 2025.

Despite these recent cases, health officials emphasize that HMPV is not a new virus in India. In 2024, the country recorded over 200 HMPV cases.  The Union Health Ministry has stated that the virus typically causes mild and self-limiting infections, with most individuals recovering without medical intervention. Adequate diagnostic facilities are available through the ICMR-VRDL laboratories.

Former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan noted that maintaining a tally of HMPV cases is "meaningless," as the virus is globally recognized and not associated with unusual outbreak patterns.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has also indicated that the current surge in respiratory illnesses, including HMPV, aligns with expected seasonal trends and does not signify a more serious global health issue.

In summary, while recent HMPV cases have been reported in India, health authorities consider the situation to be within normal seasonal expectations and not a cause for alarm.
